PROTECTING THE HOMELAND - AT HOMEAbout the book To Protect and Serve
Within the past weeks, President Bush, in responding to Osama Bin Laden’s audio tape, indicated “Third World War is raging in Iraq.” This seems to be his motive, to be the President presiding over the Third World War. Is it necessary for this nation, to be dragged into a world war?
After September 11, 2001, it would have been wise to first secure our borders right here in the U.S. Securing our borders would entail: using many of the 150,000 soldiers as Border, Port, Rail Yard, Shipping, and chemical storage security. The soldiers would be serving their nation in an even greater way. Secondly, many of our chemical plants and chemical depots in New Jersey and other prime locations, are unsecured against terrorists, and vulnerable to attack, jeopardizing the lives of vast numbers of American men, women and children. These threats even endanger main roadways such as the New Jersey Turnpike, Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.
Osama Bin Laden has been on the run since before September 2001. He most recently appeared in a voice tape on al-Jazeera television, stating “It’s only a matter of time” before another attack on the United States, as he offered a “Long term truce” with assured terms. Why is he not caught? How are we able to wage a war in a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11, and still allow this proven ring leader to roam free? Immediately following 9/11, the Bin Laden family was among those allowed out of the country aboard several aircraft. These same aircraft, under government authorization, made many stops in various cities to pick up Saudi Arabian Royal family as well as the Bin Ladens, while other aircraft was grounded. How is this protecting the Homeland? The White House response to the recent Bin Laden tapes, was to state, “We confront threats before it’s too late.” Vice President Dick Cheney, stated, regarding the Bin Laden tape; “It is impossible to overstate our success in Afghanistan and Iraq.” The airline industry is economically fading; fuel costs and cost of security are two of the problems. The industry is concerned, so much so that it is now once again allowed by the Transportation Safety Administration, to carry on board scissors, files and small knives, which had been forbidden since 9/11. They are recommending to the public, in order to expedite check-ins, a passenger may pre register giving intimate personal detail, private records, and fingerprints. Also documentation of his or her background, which will allow them to pass through check-ins unfettered.
In my novel, “To Protect and Serve” - Unconventional Threat- the story line focuses on buildings on Northern Boulevard, Queens, New York, only blocks from the 59th Street Bridge, fully laden with explosives, stocked by terrorists. Similar buildings on Willis Avenue, near the Triborough Bridge, and above the Cross Bronx Expressway at Nelson Avenue, also fully loaded with C-4 explosives, dynamite, blasting caps, and shrapnel. These explosives planned for detonation, during the opening of the World Trade Center Memorial Site; while the president and other world leaders are in New York. How possible is this scenario…? Very Possible! We need to be vigilant. A war in Iraq is a waste of national treasure, in young lives, money, and management resources. Without wracking your brain, one can see vulnerable sites right here in New York. On Brookville Blvd, an out of the way roadway in Queens in tall grass adjacent to Rockaway Boulevard, across from JFK, in the flight path of landing aircraft. They cross the road at 30 feet above the ground. On the beach in Rockaway, planes cross the sand heading for JFK, at a height of 40 feet . On Grand Central parkway, they land at LaGuardia, crossing the highway at 30 feet above the roadway, and taxi within five feet from the roadway before taking off. In Manhattan, on the FDR Drive beneath the UN Building, it’s scary, dark, and dangerous, ripe for a suspicious truck breakdown. Beneath the Major Deegan Expressway, between 138th St and 145th Street, a desolate public spot beneath the roadway, only blocks from Yankee Stadium. With police cars parked at the foot of every bridge entering and leaving Manhattan and the boroughs, why not position them at these very vulnerable locations.
The $260 billion dollars spent in this war would have paid for ninety years of social security, 75 years of Medicare, or completely eradicated homelessness in this country. Not to mention securing New Orleans, and allowing the people an opportunity to vote. As it stands, the Mayoral election in New Orleans has been postponed until April, (originally scheduled for February 2006). We need the soldiers in Iraq to come home and help to rebuild the cities right here. I believe we can do that without Halliburton, taking the lions share of the revenue. There seems to be a financial advantage to remain in Iraq. I wonder, financial advantage to whom?
